Shell Edging Photo Tutorial Row 1
The example was made with worsted weight yarn and a US size H hook.
The starting chain is made by doing 12 chains.

Row 1 – Part 1: As shown in the photo above, after doing the starting chain, begin working into the starting chain by skipping 7 of those chains, then make a shell by doing 3 double crochet, ch 3, 3 double crochet all made in the next chain.
Row 1 Part 2: Next you will do 3 chains. These 3 chains are marked on the photo above so you can see what this looks like.
Row 1 Part 3: Turn the piece around so it is facing the other way. The photo above shows what it looks like after you have done this.
There are chains left unworked from the starting chain. You will not do anything with those unworked chains at this time (you will use them later and the instructions will tell you exactly when and how).
That completes Row 1.
For comparison, following are the abbreviated crochet instructions for Row 1. Comparing these with the Row 1 piece you have crocheted or comparing with the photos above can help you understand how to read abbreviated crochet instructions.
The Abbreviated Crochet Instructions for Row 1: Skip 7 chs, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch, ch 3. Turn.

Copyright, Terms of Use: My photos shown in this post are copyrighted and are not to be published elsewhere without my express written permission (fyi: putting something on another blog or any other kind of web page is a form of publishing). This Sophie T. La Croix edging design is from the early 1900s, now in the public domain, however, I have rewritten the crochet instructions to be in modern crochet terms and I have added considerably to the very limited crochet instructions that were written in the early 1900s by Sophie T. LaCroix. The early 1900s pattern had one black and white photo of the finished item with no additional photos.
